Defense Journalist of Political Department at the Chosun Ilbo
Yu Yong-weon is a defense and security beat journalist and an editorial writer of The Chosun Ilbo. He has been the Ministry of National Defense (MND) correspondent since 1993 and is the most renowned defense journalist in South Korea. He also runs the largest military website in Korea, also known as Yu Yong-weon’s Military World (http://bemil.chosun.com). With 60,000 to 70,000 daily visitors, Yu Yong-weon’s Military World has an accumulated visitors of 368.7 million since 2001.
Yu has reported more than 40 exclusive reports, including a recent international scoop from December 2017, which reported on Chinese ships spotted selling oil to North Korea by a US spy satellite over 30 times. He has also received various awards, including the 6th Korea Journalism Awards, the 7th Aerospace Contribution Award, and the Journalists’ Association’s Journalist of the Month Award (1994). Yu received an award for holding the most number of exclusive reports (46 times) at The Chosun Ilbo.
Yu is the author of “Is Nuclear Armament Necessary for South Korea,” “Secret Report on North Korean Military,” “Weapons Bible 1, 2, 3,” etc.
As chief secretary of Korea Defense & Security Forum (KODEF), Yu also leads various security and defense related seminars. He is also a policy advisor to the Republic of Korea Army, Navy, Air Force, and Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). He serves as an external relations chairperson at Koreas Association of Defense Industry Studies (KADIS).
Yu received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Seoul National University in 1987 and was a visiting researcher at University of Missouri in 1996.
